Ahead of the NATO Summit, Canada’s announced the purchase of a new a submarine fleet, up to 12 German-Norwegian submarines. In this opinion published in The Star, Wesley Wark examines the decision, arguing that the government must now clarify their strategic purpose and how they will fit into Canada’s broader defence network. He highlights the need to integrate the submarines with underwater drones, sensors, aircraft, surface ships and icebreakers to strengthen Canada’s Arctic surveillance and deterrence capabilities.
