In this Financial Times opinion piece, Hector Torres examines Venezuela’s plans for what could become the largest sovereign debt restructuring in history involving approximately $240 billion in debt and the risks of negotiating with private creditors before securing IMF support. Drawing on Argentina’s 2020 experience, the author argues that early IMF involvement and a debt sustainability assessment could help coordinate creditors, restore investor confidence and ensure that any restructuring delivers lasting debt sustainability.
